Angelli Ascension Essay
May. 16th, 2016 05:00 pmHaving arrived in Nautilus near half a year ago, Bowser Jr's time in the city has resulted in several changes to his personality that he wouldn't have undergone at home. He started as a bratty, spoiled little prince who was willing to take what he wanted and didn't care for anyone else. But as he spends more time in Nautilus and around other Wakened, he's becoming less selfish and a little kinder, and he's starting to fit in with people better. But these changes so far are solely because of his close CR.
Nautilus as a Whole
Winning the Western welcome House from RED Medic being the most prominent thing Jr has done in Nautilus so far. He captured the base, and then from November until almost the following spring protect, repaired, and then remodeled it into a proper castle completely by himself. As such, he doesn't treat it as a welcome house but instead as his personal property and doesn't at all like uninvited people staying there. Or at least he didn't originally, with the exception of King Shadow because the hedgehog helped him get to the welcome house in the first place. Through various agreements, he's opened his home to Lysander, Asriel, Dark Leonardo, and Deadpool. With the exception of Asriel, everyone had to work somewhat for their room. But he doesn't really care enough to enforce it because he doesn't really expect them to keep working for him and he's grown used to having someone to share his home with.
Not many people know just how much trouble he can be and he has lied about his life back home to take advantage of the protectiveness people have for kids. He's been fairly well accepted without having to take what he wants, though he hasn't really gotten to the point of showing he has manners. He's simply seen that following the rules is a good way to get hat he wants without trouble.
As he continues to make more friends and have more of them than he does enemies, he's becoming more determined to protect Nautilus for them. But he isn't a hero and he's not trying to put himself out there as one. So he's instead decided to use his badness for the greater good. This started with using disguises to attack the town meeting and cause a disturbance with the sole intention of being taken down by the Freedom Fighters. Shadow had convinced him that the best way to bring order to the city and make it safer was to put the power in the hands of the Freedom Fighters. And he was willing to give that a try. Most recently, this has led to the plotting to kill Relius. Jr has reservations about this due to Relius cooperating earlier and being useful, but this is a necessary step to realize Shadow's plans and he wants to support him.
Oisin/Lysander
When Lysander came along, Jr was upset by the man just trying to invite himself in on the logic that it was a welcome house and demanded that he earn the right to stay for a little while by helping clear out the robots from the current storm. But a little while has turned into months. Lysander comes and goes, but he indulges Jr, gave him a Christmas even though Jr isn't good, and has been an almost surrogate father to him in Bowser's absence. Jr doesn't treat him like a dad, but he tolerates Lysander's parenting.
Because of Lysander's kind but strict attitude, Jr has become willing to do as told unless Lysander were to tell him to do something he really doesn't want to...even though he'll sometimes fuss about it regardless because he doesn't want to take orders in his own home. But he does. Lysander gets a say in most things, especially food. As long as Jr gets his fill. Before, anyone telling him what to do would be kicked out right away.
During Klement's judgement, Jr was bothered by the fact that he had been punished, and tried to make him see that it wasn't okay in Nautilus to be punished for something that had nothing to do with Nautilus. He even indirectly confessed to being a bad guy who did deserve punishment with that thinking, whereas he's been carefully keeping up the "I'm saving my mom from a bad man" facade whenever he tells anyone about his home. This shows a level of trust and respect that only his dad would have gotten from him previously. He was greatly surprised to find how little Lysander seemed to care about who he was and what he had done though.
He missed the whole thing with Lysander's world flaw, but has since continued as normal with the exception of Lysander wanting to be called Oisin. Or he had until Oisin moved into a place of his own. He went to the housewarming but was less than pleased by him leaving.
Asriel
Asriel is possibly the biggest example of how he's been changing. Over the several months that both have been here, Jr has begun to see and treat Asriel as less of a weakling and pest, and more like someone that he wants to protect. He still sees him as weak, too open, and not careful enough, but that's just brought out his protectiveness.
He met Asriel the first time by butting in on his conversation with Talitha, putting her down because of how stupid he found her and advising Asriel against getting involved with her. But when Lysander later brought Asriel around to the welcome house, Jr wasn't pleased because he didn't want another of his rooms taken and didn't see any use for Asriel. Asriel was just a big baby and was practically asking to be picked on, but for some reason wanted to get closer to Jr. Jr really didn't interact with him much, though he did Bend him a scarf for Christmas when he made a bunch of gifts in response to getting gifts from his other CR. It wasn't until Asriel tried to stop him from going home that things really changed though.
With the plant disease happening, Jr had decided he would go home until it blew over. When Asriel tried to stop him, he had pushed the smaller prince and unintentionally caused him to lose HP. He was bothered by that, and by how hurt Asriel seemed, but left anyway. When he came back, he soon learned that Asriel had run away shortly before he came back. This hadn't sat well with him and he later went out looking for him, where before he'd have been glad to see him gone and not bothered. Especially because at the time he had been all beat up from his trip home.
This was repeated when Dark Leo caught Asriel to ask about the city, with Jr turning up to protect him...while unintentionally belittling him at the same time. He called Asriel weak right where he could hear it and complained that it fell to him to teach him not to be a pushover, while also keeping him out of Dark Leo's reach as they took him to the market. This hasn't really changed. Asriel is still weak to him, but he does try to teach him to stand up for himself through his rough treatment.
It was repeated again when Asriel accidentally killed a spider and became distraught. Jr went out to find him and got him home to give him a bath. He also for the first time outright acknowledged Asriel as a member of his house when he said they should go home, mentioning Asirel's room as his room. And later when Asriel ran him down in his newly gifted Clown Car, Jr only dumped him out of it and scolded him for using it. He also complained about that to anyone who asked about what was going on, but he offered to teach Asriel how to drive it despite this. He's still very rough with him, but he shares with him and in his own way is looking out for his well-being.
When he found out that Klement had judged Asriel he became very frustrated even though he still refuses to say that he cares. The fact that he couldn't help and how long Asriel was down after the punishment finished had been a source of irritation for him and was one of the biggest factors in prompting him into trying to do more to protect those he's around often.
A recent city shift has also revealed some feelings that Jr is too young to properly understand. Having been aged up to a teenager, he developed a crush on Asriel and became more direct in expressing his concern for him. He doesn't have a clear memory of this, but the lingering closeness has made him more open. At least with Asriel.
This continuing concern has been shown through concern for people Asriel cares about, and his concern for Asriel's post-storm well-being during the Alignment Swap storm. Despite his nature swapping as well, Asriel was his biggest priority because he knew that if things went too far then Asriel wouldn't fare well. But in truth, since Asriel is his first real friend and only remaining housemate, he would have done the same normally.
Alignment Swap Storm
During the storm, Jr and Asriel both swapped natures, but Asriel's was more extreme. Jr became concerned and did say as much on the network, but also resolved to find and stop Asriel from doing anything he regretted. He also expressed concern for Irene, who he knew had been injured not long ago and that Asriel was fond of. He was upset when Oisin was hurt by Asriel, but wouldn't be dissuaded from finding him, and he eventually confronted and was able to stop him.
In the aftermath he spoke with Link, who he'd recently spoken with about people in Nautilus. They talked about the storm and what Link should do the next time anything like this happened. As well as what was okay for a hero to do...at which point Jr also told him flat out that he was a bad guy but knew that a hero could do anything he wanted to stop bad guys and still be called good. The disagreement that followed still confuses Jr, as Link didn't agree with it at all and seemed displeased to hear how Jr was dealt with. This is giving him more to think on on the matter, alongside whether or not he is too mean and making himself lonely.
As far as major events so far that's about it. He's not learned to be good, but he's becoming less selfish and more concerned for others as things happen around him. This can especially be seen in him saving Kenny from a high fall, by jumping out after him and cushioning his fall with his own body.
